The first vintage of UKAN was characterized by the rain that fell during the year, especially in September when the grapes were almost fully ripened, postponing harvest to October. After the fermentation in open-top oak vats, and aging for seventeen months, in May 2020 the single-vineyard wines were blended obtaining an elegant and balanced wine that shows the freshness of the year it was born in.

This year had many similarities to 2016, particularly in terms of high yields, but the profile was fresher following a wet and cold spring that delayed flowering. The ripening season was particularly long, yielding a wine that is fresh with vibrant acidity and moderate alcohol levels, reminiscent of the times when Rioja relied on balance and acidity rather than alcohol. Some producers say that tannins will need more time to soften. While challenging, some outstanding wines were made in this vintage. There is no doubt that the 2018 vintage has a character of its own.

The grapes were hand-harvested into 15kg small bins, the bunches were received at the sorting table for a rigorous selection. For maceration, the grapes were 70% destemmed, and 30% were left as whole cluster. Fermentation took place in 20HL French oak open-top vats prior to moving the wine to new oak barrels for 17 months of aging, 95% of which were French, and 5% were American.
